In the silence and simplicity of this retreat, we will practise mindfulness [vipassana, insight meditation] and heartfulness [various compassion practices], so that we will see the magic and mysteries of the mind and hear the whisperings of the heart. There will also be plenty of time for rest, going for walks in the beautiful grounds of Emmaus, and individual practice. There will also be time for reflecting, together or in private talks with Marjó, on how the practice is going. A silent retreat is an ideal opportunity to see where we judge and to have compassion for that; and to see where there is joy and to find ways to share that. And we get a taste of the equanimity and contentment that arise when we realise that we are already completely and fully enough as we are.

Experiencing Good Friday

"The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing... not healing, not curing... that is a friend who cares." Henri Nouwen The day will begin with tea/coffee at 10.00am, followed by the ritual at 10.30am. Participants will be invited into a reflective space that will include some time for quiet, personal prayer. A simple lunch of soup and rolls will be taken in silence at 1.00pm. Stations will be held outdoors at 2.00pm, so be prepared! The day will conclude with a cup of tea/coffee at 3.00pm. Participants in other years have found this to be an important opportunity to reflect informally on the experience of the ritual.
