Maeve Peoples introduces us to meditation through art in this one day workshop where we allow ourselves the time to reflect, be still and create. By focusing the mind on the task of drawing and expressing creatively we learn how to access an inner stillness. Meditation through art offers us a simple but effective path through the stresses of modern life.
10.00 – 10.30: Group introduction and aspirations for the day, a brief introduction to art and meditation, and the content of the workshop.
10.30 – 11.30: The first exercise will begin with a short grounding using a simple guided relaxation.
Creative Therapy is an aid to focusing and relaxation. A perfect introduction to drawing, or perhaps reintroduction, is to colour in. Participants can choose from one of six different black and white drawings and complete them with colour them using a choice of mediums; pencils, markers or crayons. Members of the group are encouraged to follow their instincts when it comes to all choices, from the drawing they pick to the colours they choose, feeling their way through the exercise as they go. There is no right or wrong way to work, no ideal to be achieved, or perfect outcome.
Towards the end of this exercise, the group will be offered time in small groups of three to discuss the experience and explore their reflections. There will then be an opportunity to share in the big group. Insights on our way of being are often more apparent to others than ourselves.
11.30 – 11.45: Break
11.45 – 13.00: The second exercise, ‘Black and White’ will begin with a short breathing exercise.
Using only a pencil and black pen, each participant is asked to create a few basic shapes and/or lines in pencil on a 150mm square piece of paper. Erasers are not provided, mistakes are not seen as such, but as unconscious aspects coming to the fore, to be incorporated in the drawing. There is no right or wrong technique. Participants then infill the drawing with repeating patterns, dots, zig-zags, spirals, to name a few. Guidance will be given from the tutor to encourage and develop these drawings. As before, time will be given over to reflections before finishing up for lunch.
13.00 – 14.00: Lunch
14.00 – 15.30: Guided Imagery Painting. Approximately 15 minutes will be given over to a guided meditation. The group will move silently into “free style” painting. Each participant will work to create a unique piece using the medium of paint. Time will be allocated to integration and discussion in dials and then the larger group.
15.30 – 16.00. Reflections on the day and closure of the group.
